WHS Senior Honored in Two Circle City Classic Events
Tamila is having a great senior year!
She was selected to be part of the Circle City Classic Coronation, and was one of two Christel House students recognized as Circle City Classic® Student-Athlete Achievement Award recipients. Tamila was introduced to the program through Assistant Principal, Mrs. Conway. Her application was accepted, and she was able to meet the other young women selected at the Indiana Black Expo Youth Leadership Summit, where they worked on a marketing project for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
The young women met on weekends for workshops that focused on self-reflection, self-esteem and confidence, networked with speakers, built public speaking skills, and prepared for their showcase dance and fashion show performance.
Tamila had this to say about her experience: “Overall, being a part of the Circle City Classic Coronation was an experience beyond what words could describe! I’m extremely grateful for the relationships I’ve built with the other participants as well as the former winners and participants of the program.” Although she didn’t win, she said, “I am fortunate enough to have still walked away with more than I’d ever have asked for or expected. I’d highly recommend all young black girls in Indiana to apply for the program!”
Tamila was also nominated for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship and is moving through that process. Tamila attended elementary and middle school at CH West, and we’re so glad she stayed with Christel House for high school. Her activities include three years as cheerleading captain, Students in Action leader, Freshmen Mentor, President of the Black Student Union, Student Athlete Leadership Committee, and the Carmel Rotary’s Leadership Connection. We are all so proud of everything she’s doing as a WHS student and community member!

When Damilola Adesanya moved to Indiana, she knew she wanted to go back to school. She had been attending college in Nigeria, but she wasn't able to transfer her credits from home. A friend recommended Christel House DORS, the adult high school. "I didn't want to go back to high school," she admits, "but let's give it a try." Today she's a nurse - and continuing her education.
Damilola started at DORS in 2018. “My goal was to go to college and have a career,” she says. She focused her efforts, taking dual-credit classes such as math and English through Ivy Tech Community College. Graduating DORS in 2019, Christel House offered Damilola support, providing help with college tuition. “I’ve always wanted to be in a medical field,” she says. Nursing was the best choice. She graduated in December 2021 from Ivy Tech with a nursing degree and was recruited to work at Eskenazi Health. Enrolling at IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis) Damilola is continuing her studies with a goal of working in critical care. She is considering what she wants to do. “I have options – should I get my masters and become a nurse practitioner or go back to medical school?” She pauses and thinks about her choices and smiles. “I don’t want to stop learning.”
